Chapter 9 – Finn

Holly’s breath tickled Finn’s neck. They were floating on a weightless cloud, surrounded by an infinite blue sky. At least, it felt like they were; being with her like this, having her by his side after so long, it was as though he’d somehow ended up in heaven after years of being trapped in hell. She was his angel, the source of light he’d been missing his whole life.

With each breath, the blue faded around Finn, and the log walls of the cabin slowly came into view. He resisted the change from sleep to waking; he wanted to stay here in this peaceful bliss forever and never return to the barren landscape that used to stretch between him and Holly. A landscape filled with obstacles and pain and demons conjured by their history together.

But despite his resistance, sleep fell away like a curtain from the rod. Yet it wasn’t a living hell he woke to. No, he woke to Holly in his arms, sound asleep with her cheek on his chest. She looked so peaceful, her eyes dancing back and forth beneath their lids. It was like right now, they were both in heaven—no conflict between or around them, neither real nor imagined.

They just existed, like they should have all along. Like they could have, years ago, if he hadn’t … if he hadn’t …

Finn’s eyes drifted to Holly’s arms, which were covered in a network of white crisscrossing scars. Some had healed well, and were only fine white lines, but others were grueling and bumpy.

He’d done this to her. He’d lost control and attacked her out of fear and anger and … he didn’t know. Over the past few days, since she first showed him those scars, Finn had revisited that night several times in his memories in search of answers. But still they hadn’t come.

All he knew was he was the one who’d created the hellscape between them, and dug a void so deep and raw he didn’t know where to begin filling in those gaps. Even now, that peaceful, angelic dream space was peeling away, leaving the world feeling duller and more dangerous.

His fingers traced the uneven lines, and as though those spots were more sensitive than the rest of her skin, Holly’s eyes fluttered beneath their lids as if disturbed, but she didn’t wake. She groaned something in her sleep and rolled away from him, clutching her arms to her chest.

Finn’s heart lurched. He wouldn’t quite call what she was doing a kind of pain response, more like a visceral memory, one she must’ve relived countless times. All her suffering over these past years was because of him. A cascading effect because he had attacked her.

Finn had been selfish and oblivious enough to blame her for making him attack her. Their pack had treated her horribly in the aftermath because he’d twisted the truth against her. But the truth was, none of what had happened to her had been her fault. She never deserved to be treated as lesser just because she mistakenly thought he was her mate.
